The 4th Global Agripreneurs Summit for the first time in Greece

The 4th World Conference on Agri-Food Entrepreneurship (Global Agripreneurs Summit – GAS) was held for the first time in Greece from 7 to 11 September 2019, during the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF).

GAS is an international meeting, in which innovative entrepreneurs active in the field of agri-food, policy makers, leaders and representatives of international organizations, farmers-producers and investors work collectively to promote agriculture as a source of sustainable development. The aim of the conference, which is organized every year in a different country, is to highlight the most important modern trends and innovation in the agri-food sector as a basis for the production of high value-added products and services.

With the central title “The role of the Farmer in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution – Defining the Future Farmer 4.0”, the agenda of the conference includes interesting topics including IoT, blockchain, Robotics in agricultural production, the use of drones in agri-food sector, the transformation of the food industry, aquaculture, stockraising, etc. Indicatively, issues such as:

The need for technology to participate in agriculture in order to feed the ever-growing population, which will reach 7.4 billion in 2050, without further burdening the land.
The changes that will occur in agri-food, which by 2050 will be 3.8% of world GDP.
The visible possibility that robots will gradually replace part of the current role of the farmer.

High-level roundtable meetings were also held in the context of GAS, during which proposals for policy-making in the agri-food sector were discussed. More specifically, government representatives and key executives of international organizations proposed policies for the more efficient development of the sector, by improving the use of new technologies and their impact on the daily lives of farmers.

The highlight of the conference is the world final of the “Future Agro Challenge” (FAC), the global competition platform, where 50 start-ups from around the world presented live, on a global stage, their innovative ideas in the fields of primary production, nutrition, food safety and food traceability and sustainability.

The Future Agro Challenge (FAC) is a Greek initiative with an international presence in 64 countries, created to bring together entrepreneurs, farmers and policymakers to address challenges in the field of agri-food, such as food security, agricultural stimulation productivity and the reduction of the environmental footprint. The FAC is coordinated by Industry Disruptors – Game Changers, represents EIT Food in Greece and aims to strengthen and mature start-ups that develop new products or services in the agri-food sector and are an essential pillar for any productive and sustainable economy.
